We’ve resurrected this historic church into a dynamic coworking space. History of 3117 Whiting AvenueIn 1904, a small congregation started meeting in a simple mill home on North Meyers Street for their Sunday worship and other weekly gatherings. After outgrowing their space, they build a free-standing church on 36th street (where the Mercury NoDa now stands) in 1908. In 1950, the congregation had once again grown too large for their church home and leaders moved forward with the purchase of eight lots on Whiting Avenue. In 1952, home to a congregation of over 500 people, the church changed its name to Whiting Avenue Baptist Church. In 1962, a new Sanctuary featuring the stained-glass windows was completed and served its members and community over the next four decades. By the start of the 21st Century, the neighborhood church was in decline and in 2001 the Whiting Avenue Baptist Church buildings were donated to New Life Theological Seminary. In the summer of 2017, New Life Theological Seminary made the decision to sell their facility so they could better adapt to the ever-changing landscape of secondary education. In 2019, Randy Martin from neighboring Plaza Midwood, was given the opportunity to purchase the remaining stained-glass sanctuary. With a commitment to adaptive re-use and historic preservation, Congregate NoDa was transformed into a dynamic coworking space with flex space, dedicated desks, private offices and suites.
